I can tell you right-off-the-bat, this kid will not be scared easily. I had both "Scary Story" books by Alvin Schwartz. The illustrations by Stephen Gammell are absolutely terrifying. Still to this day, I can vividly remember those disturbing images (keeping in mind that these books were aimed at children). Google his name or pick up one of his books, it's worth it.
